Online Coaching vs In-Person: Which One Is Right For You?
An honest comparison of online coaching and in-person personal training — written by a coach who does both.
I get this question on every consult call: "Can online coaching actually work, or do I need to be in the room with you?"
Both work. They work for different people, and they work for different reasons. After two years of running Restore & Perform Fitness across both formats, here's the unvarnished breakdown.
What you get from in-person training
There's no replacement for hands-on cueing in three situations:
Beginners learning the lifts. When you've never squatted before, having a coach physically adjust your foot position, tap the muscle they want to fire, and watch your bar path in real time — that's irreplaceable. Six in-person sessions can compress what would take 12 weeks of video back-and-forth.
Advanced lifters chasing tiny technical gains. When you're a 400-lb deadlifter trying to add 10 lbs without breaking down, the cue you need is the cue your coach gives mid-rep. You can't get that over text.
Anyone with a chronic injury that needs feel-based work. Some corrective work — breath drills, pelvic floor cueing, neural re-education — needs touch. Online can supplement, but the breakthrough usually happens in person.
What you get from online coaching
Online wins on three different fronts:
Programming quality, not session quality. When I write your program online, I'm sitting at my desk with your screen videos and your data — uninterrupted. The plan is sharper than what I'd whiteboard at 6am between sessions.
Accountability over a longer arc. In-person, you're motivated for the hour you're with me. Online, you have weekly check-ins, daily chat, and form reviews. The accountability is constant, not episodic.
Geography and schedule. If you live an hour from the nearest qualified coach, or you travel weekly, or your kid wakes up at 4:50am — online is the only thing that survives real life.
The honest comparison
| Factor | In-Person | Online |
|---|---|---|
| Real-time form correction | Best | Good with video |
| Cost per session | Higher | Lower |
| Schedule flexibility | Rigid | Total |
| Accountability | Episodic | Daily |
| Programming depth | Same | Same |
| Travel-friendly | No | Yes |
How to choose
Pick in-person if: - You're new to lifting and want to nail the fundamentals fast. - You're working through an injury that needs hands-on cueing. - You live in or near Hartford, MI and want the social-energy element.
Pick online if: - You travel, work shifts, or have kids that destroy your calendar. - You've been training a while and need better programming, not better cues. - You want a coach in your pocket without paying gym-rates.
What if you want both?
A lot of my clients run a hybrid: 4–6 weeks of in-person to lock in the lifts, then graduate to online with periodic in-person tune-ups. It's the highest-leverage option if logistics allow.
Whatever format you pick, the non-negotiables are the same: a coach who screens before they program, a plan written for your body (not a template), and check-ins that adjust based on real data. Anything less is just exercise content with extra steps.
